MADRID, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- Jay Vine of UAE-Team Emirates-XRG won Tuesday the 10th stage of the Vuelta a Espana (Tour of Spain) cycle race in return to racing after Monday's rest day.

The Australian climber was part of a breakaway of around 30 riders on the 175 kilometer stage between Parque de la Naturaleza Sendavivia to el Ferrial Larra Belagua in the northern Spanish region of Navarra.

Jonas Vingegaard of Visma-Lease-A-Bike returned to the overall lead as recovered the 37-second lead Bahrain Victorios' Torsten Traeen held over him going into the rest day.

Although the stage was classified as 'flat with an uphill finale', that didn't tell the whole story of a day that was held over constantly rolling countryside, with a first category climb at the end.

The first two hours were ridden at a furious pace as the breakaway looked to gain time on the main peloton, with the riders covering 99 kilometers in the first two hours.

Even at the start of the final climb, the average speed was only just below 47 kilometers an hour, which helped to split the break into several smaller groups, with Vine showing he had the legs to ride away.

In the main group, Vingegaard also looked strong and with Matteo Jorgenson providing impressive support, he was able to take the time he needed off Traeen to return to the leader's red jersey ahead of Wednesday's testing stage that takes in seven categorized climbs while starting and finishing in Bilbao.

The day began with Spanish rider Juan Ayuso criticize his UAE-Team Emirates-XRG team over its decision to confirm he would be leaving at the end of 2025, three years before the end of his contract.

"I have suffered one lack of respect after another," commented the rider to the press before the stage, calling his team "a unilateral dictatorship over me." ■
