BEIJING, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed lower on Tuesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 0.45 percent to 3,858.13 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 2.14 percent lower at 12,553.84 points.

The combined turnover of these two indices stood at 2.87 trillion yuan (about 403.72 billion U.S. dollars) -- up from 2.75 trillion yuan on the previous trading day.

Shares related to banks, precious metals and PEEK plastics led the gains, while stocks related to communication equipment and electronic components suffered major losses.

The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, lost 2.85 percent to close at 2,872.22 points on Tuesday. ■
